Backing up to iCloud, are they there even if de...

I've searched in numerous forums for a direct answer, and I've read a few different replies. Maybe someone could direct me to the right place or answer these questions for me:

I wanted to take my iMac documents, photos, music etc and back them up to iCloud, so I could clear the iMac to sell it and have them when I purchase a new computer. I've heard that people have lost their files when they delete them from their main computer.... are the files not backed up on iCloud then? I was thinking it was a cloud storage, like OneDrive or DropBox. I know syncing the files doesn't back them up, but how do I know if they're really backed up??

Also, I have numerous CDs uploaded to iTunes, and the songs cannot be verified through iTunes as a verified purchase since it wasn't done through apple.. will I lose those songs, even if showing up on apple music?

I'm so confused!!

Thanks!

No - iCloud is not a backup for the Mac - is is a syncing service so any changes you make on your Mac (or any other connected device) are made on iCloud too

You need a local hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)  and backup  your personal files before you erase your computer to sell
