Buying first Mac, what year?

We are looking at upgrading our current labtop and we're looking at the Macs. I'm not afraid to upgrade the memory or some other components myself. So with that being said what year of Mac would be best. I have done a little research and 2012 always comes up. We like the Retina and don't seem to need a optic drive but not a deal breaker. 

We do homeschool our kids and surf the web. Some video editing is coming soon.

If you want to upgrade the memory after purchase don't get a retina display. The RAM in retina display notebooks is soldered to the logic board and are not upgradeable. The SSD in the new notebooks is soldered to the logic board and can not be upgraded after purchase. Personally I would get the most storage and RAM in the newest computer I could afford. A 2012 computer is already 5 years old with respect to technology.
