oxford dictionary of english (ODE) not working ...
After installing iOS 9.0.1 yesterday on my iPad 3 I can't open the ODE (Oxford Dictionary of English -- with audio) nor the OTE (Oxford Thesaurus of English)
I've restarted the iPad but same situation.
I've noticed there is a version 8.1.3 of the ODE in the (iOS) app store but there doesn't appear to be an update for my current, older version, for which I paid $30 some yrs ago.
Does this mean I have to repurchase the ODE and OTE?
No d**m way, $60 is $60, I want an update!
Does anyone know if there is an update?
Or a way to get the older ODE and OTE working?
re Oxford Dictionary of English (ODE) not working after iOS 9.0.1 install
After contacting MobiSystems, Inc., re my problem as described in previous post I've found that they don't support the ODE:
Please note that this is not a licensed MobiSystems product. The developer
of the app is English Channel, Inc. Please contact them for more details about your issue.
English Channel have a very minimal website https://english-channel.tv/faq/faq.html
Support appears to be minimal or non-existent.
So Apple's iOS 9 upgrade has nuked my two dictionary apps at a cost to me of $60
They are still working on my iPhone 4 though.
Mobisystems do publish a newer version of the ODE and OTE, which are roughly $25 each.
But these apps are not in any way linked to the older ODE and OTE.
My question to the publisher, creator of the Oxford dictionaries is what happened?
And why should I trust a company, any company that dumps its users when a license for a product is transferred?
It seems that MobiSystems don't want anything to do with resolving my problem with the ODE and OTE apps.
Here's their latest reply:
Barrie Collins,
A customer support staff member has replied to your support request, #45571
2 with the following response:
Hello Barrie,
Thank you for letting us know about your situation. Please note that MobiSy
stems is the only reliable developer of ODE apps. The rest of the software
with this name is not legal and there is no transfer of licenses.
So please choose carefully the apps you purchase.
We hope this response has sufficiently answered your questions.
Best Regards,
Darina Ivanova
end of quote.
The ODE is available on the app store for 'free' https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/oxford-dictionary-english/id978674211
However what you find in iTunes is that it has an in-app purchase price of $24.99
I don't trust MobiSystems and think that Apple should do something about this vendor and about the fact that iOS 9 has stopped the original dictionary from working.
Further to this farce re the ODE and OTE:
From Mobiystems on Facebook:
Hi Barrie, have you contacted our support team to resolve your complaint? We license content from ODE, if you bought an app from another developer, there wouldn't be a transfer of license from them to us. However we are happy to review the details of your issue. If you would like to open an official support ticket please outline the details of your complaint in an email to us at support@mobisystems.com
My response:
Oxford University Press, in agreeing to license their content to a developer should be aware that purchasers of the app with their ODE content would not be impressed when the apps ceased working. They should at least come to an agreement with the new developer to compensate the previous user base in some way.
Complaint to Apple:
After installing iOS 9.0.1 my apps the ODE (Oxford Dictionary of English) and the OTE (Oxford Thesaurus of English) ceased working.
These apps cost me a total of $60
Research on the web indicates that the apps in question have moved to a new developer. This developer doesn't appear to offer an upgrade/update path, instead to operate the apps offline I am asked to pay $25 each for them.
I either want a refund from the app store or an explanation from Apple as to why the new developer seems to think they have the right to ignore established users of ODE content and charge for the new app without any explanation.
Just dropped this on Oxford's site.
My query is about the ODE and OTE
I purchased both above apps for iOS two years ago at a total cost of $60.
After installing iOS 9.0.1 on my iPad 3 recently the ODE (Oxford Dictionary of English) and the OTE (Oxford Thesaurus of English) ceased working.
In my understanding I paid to use the content of the apps.
I enquired about this in the Apple discussions forum, it appears that the ODE and OTE are now handled by a new developer, MobiSystems. No update or upgrade path is offered for users of the previous app using the same content, your content.
Am I to understand that I have to pay AGAIN to use the same content in a new app? I want to use the dictionaries offline sometimes, to do this I'm required to pay $24.99 for each app. You're asking me to pay twice for the same content, hat's called a rort. We have consumer protections here in Australia, double dipping on content would be frowned upon.
You and Apple have to do something about this.
Hi drowningdata,
I have the same problem after updating to iOS 11 for iPad. I perfectly agree with what you write about ODE and Apple. Your last post was in October 2015. How did the situation evolve since then?
Thanks
Hi marcfromfribourg,
Memory is dim on this issue but it was resolved satisfactorily by discussion with the new developer. They gave me access to the ODE and OTE, can't remember how that worked.
I guess the lesson is 'the squeaky wheel gets the most oil'.
Here is an email which might throw some light on the subject:
v1.3 That is super old so it was before we had the server check
system in place so the free validation system will not work on your
device. You didn't update the app with any of the updates that were
released? You should really keep all your apps up to date as well as
your operating system version. You should also back-up all of your apps and data on your device to
your computer using the cable about once a week. This will save you a
world of pain if you ever lose or break your device.Anyway, enough of the lecture. Here is a code for a free copy of the
non-inap version of the ODE.
H9KRLANN74JXJust enter this into the redeem area of iTunes and it will download
automatically for free. You can delete all other versions of the ODE app as they will not be
supported in the future.

Hope this helps.

BTW I have a whole string of emails where I discussed the ODE issue with the developer if you are interested. I'm not sure how sharing how this would effect their reputation, or mine, but the process of getting ODE etc working again was fairly extended.
