slow 2015 mac mini

Hi all,

Got a mac mini that I've had about 3 months. I was brought to replace the 2007 imac I had.

I installed the mini by restoring the old time machine back up.

I don't use it for much power hungry stuff (web, email, excel etc) but not all at the same time.

It just feels slow and I fell like I see the rainbow circle thing all the time.

I am just wondering if I've installed some crap from the old imac that I don't need.

I attach the etre report.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ian

Oh yes, I got confused because you said 2015 Mini, which there isn't one... I assumed you had an older one. But now I see the EtreCheck report shows Late 2014, which is when Apple first decided not to allow upgrades in the Mini. You may consider purchasing a Mini with more RAM and selling the one you have. I see you've been using Time Machine so it should be an easy transition if you decide to go through with that.

You have traces of MacKeeper on your system. Remove those.

You only have 4GB of RAM, and that is clearly not enough for you, as you only had 69MB of free RAM at the time of the report. Upgrade to at least 8GB. Visit https://macsales.com or https://crucial.com. They are not the only two RAM vendors, but are the ones most commonly recommended here.

Thanks.

I've removed the trace of mackeeper.

I've looked on crucial.com (or the UK version thereof).

It wasn't finding memory upgrade options and on closer investigation I've found out that Apple in their wisdom have made the RAM non-upgradeable which frankly *****.

So I am limited to restriciting what I use on the machine to keep with the constraints of the 4GB memory.

Sadly the RAM in the late model Mac Mini is not upgradeable and you will need to either:

1. Stream line and run less Apps at the same time. (noting that: it may only help slightly)

2. Sell that Mac Mini and buy a new one that is configured with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM.

3. Sell and/or trade that Mac Mini for a late 2012, where the RAM is user upgradable to 16GB of RAM.

Thanks.

I think long term I will replace my imac with another imac (taking care to make sure it's one with upgradeable ram!).

I can make do with this for now, I think my kids will end up with it.

That is a very good way to repurpose. In my case, used but functional Mac's go to the grandkids.

I have the same model (Macmini7,1), 1.4 GHZ, I5. (I purchased this new 2016)

My macmini is also very slow.  Every application takes long time to open (rainbow wheel spinning all the time).

Sometimes, typing letters make rainbow wheel to appear!

I really think that this is hardware issue.  My system does not have any third party software installed.

It has been performing poorly since day 1.

This is slower than 10 year old computer.

I have purchased lots of Macs over the years: powermac, imac (2x), macbook pro, macbook air

I will not be purchasing Macs anymore.  Macs are NO LONGER have impressive performance!
