extend mail search to include older emails

I semi retired my MacBook about 18 months ago.  I still find some of the modern features on my iMac with OS sierra difficult to adjust.  When  I search for an email in the Mail app it only goes back for a short amount of time.  When I want to find a utility bill from last month I find that the search doesn't go back that far.  I end up logging on to my semi-retired MacBook and it does a search from some of my earliest emails, if they contain the search criteria.  How do I get the newest version of Mail on my iMac to search further back?  I don't see the option to extend that search date under preferences, but there should be a way.  Suggestions are appreciated.
