My Mac only outputs audio in Mono whenever I us...

Hi everyone,

My MacBook Pro 2012 (non-retina) is able to output stereo through the speakers.

Whenever I plug in an audio device, like earphones, headphones, speakers, it always outputs in mono.

Is there any way to change this in the settings?

Then you aren't pushing the headphone jack in far enough, the headphones are faulty or your system has a faulty headphone jack. Remove and reinsert it a few times to see if that helps. Make sure it is pushed all the way in.

System Preferences > Accessibility > Audio

Uncheck the box next to "Play stereo as mono".

i still hear my speakers as mono...

Not sure if this has been resolved for all of you yet or not.  I was having the same issue as well.  Found the answer that worked for me.  Hopefully it will for you.

Go to Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup

Volumes on the speaker may be off.  One of my channels was turned way down and was giving me a mono effect.  Up the volume on the slider to even them out.  You can also change the settings if they are off.  I think the default is 44100.0 Hz and 2ch-16bit.  Hope that helps.

Make sure that the balance on the Headphone jack is set correctly.

What worked for me was SMC and PRAM reset.

MacBook Air SMC and PRAM reset

This was happening when using my AirPods. What worked for me was turning off the dictation feature. I had enabled it some time ago and never really used it. I disabled it and stereo returned to my AirPods. Phew, a week of looking for that solution.
