iPhone as external hard drive

Is there any way I can access my iPhone when plugged into my iMac as if my iPhone was an external hard drive? I can do this very easily if I plug my iPhone into my PC. On the PC, the contents on the iPhone show up like  files on a memory stick and I can then copy /transfer them to wherever I want on my PC. But on the Mac, I can't do this. I'm apparently reduced to things being copied / sent to to iCloud and my then having to download stuff from iCloud to the hard drive on my iMac. This is a *very slow way* of doing things. Any help would be very gratefully received. Thank you.

Unless you have an older Mac, AirDrop is also an option.
