Sierra and Time Machine

Hi.

So I upgraded to Sierra yesterday morning.

Time Machine has been stuck since.

It's stuck on 'Preparing Backup'.

It's been about 18 hours.

At what point should I worry? And suggestions on a fix?

Don

I'm having the same issue. Hopefully we can get some assistance regarding this issue.

I had the same issue.  It was on "Preparing Backup" for hours.  I just stopped the backup and restarted it and now it's working!    Slow.. but working!

HI.

I contacted Apple and was given these Instructions.

SMC RESET for the iMac

1. Shut down the device

2. Disconnect the power cord from the monitor

3. Wait 60 seconds

4. Reconnect power cord

5. DO NOT POWER UP DEVICE

PRAM RESET

1. The computer should still be shut down.

2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.

3. Press and release the power button to turn on the computer.

4. press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears. Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the 3rd time.

5. Release the keys.

I'd like you to perform these steps one after the other ok?

I will update with results in the morning.

Don

Same problem here...

Yesterday...

"Preparing Backup" took many many MANY hours, - than backup finally started...

Also took many hours...

This morning, after restarting my iMac Time Machine was hanging again...

"Preparing"...

After an hour Tim Machine finally starts up...

Copying...

But... very very slow...

Hi Don (@arizonadonn),

Did it help?

Just asking...

I solved my slow-Time Machine problem in macOS Sierra!

After Time Machine (again) took ages to backup I stopped Time Machine by unchecking "Automatic backups" in System Preferences/Time Machine (unchecking the new little "check-box").

After this abrupt stop I again checked that little check-box "Automatic backups" in System Preferences/Time Machine.

Then activated "manual backup" (starting backup) by activating Time Machine via menubar.

The first Time Machine (TM) was slow again, but after stopping and restarting a few times (stop and restarting by check-uncheck/System Preferences and starting up by "manual backup"/menubar).

TM then copied as it should.

...But then after successful copying "Backup thinning" took forever... ("opschonen" in Dutch).

Stopped "Backup thinning" by unchecking Automatic backups" in System Preferences/Time Machine.

Then activated "manual backup" by activating Time Machine via menubar (after I again checked "Automatic backups" in System Preferences/Time Machine).

Now "Backup thinning" - when necessary - completes the TM-backup successfully.

TM is working fine (and fast) now (automatic hourly backups).

Perhaps this is helpful?

It worked for me.

Best regards,

I have upgraded to Sierra. Since then, the capsule stopped working as hard drive with my machine. It does not even show up in the finder. I have no problem to connect to it with an old mac. Something is going on

Hi.

I followed the procedures for resetting things last night and then went to bed.

My Time Machine still says 'Preparing Backup'.

Don

Hi Don,

I solved my problem (see above)...

Perhaps that helps...

I noticed that in Console (typing "backupd" in the search box/"diagnoses and user-info") many lines with "backupd" in it.

In never saw this in previous OS X-versions - see also this question/thread of mine...How can I see Time Machine activity in Console with macOS Sierra.

Could it be that after updating to Sierra Time Machine is indexing the whole Time Machine-disk and this is the reason it takes forever?

It would be helpful to know what Time Machine is doing all this time...

A few years ago "pondini",  who is  king in solving Time Machine-troubles, was very active in "Apple Support Communities". He even has his own website concerning Time Machine... https://pondini.org

He did not update his website for a few years now...

His troubleshooting was very helpful to me then...

Were are the multilevel-experts?

Hi.

I tried starting and stopping several times. Nothing.

I got back with Apple and they have me in Safe Mode now trying to start a backup.

It's not working yet.

Don

HI.

Apple is having be reinstall Sierra.

Safe mode did not do anything.

Don

Wow!

That *****!

You're not the only one who has problems with TM since updating to Sierra.

Again...

It would be nice to see (in Console) what TM is doing.

Anyone? - multilevel experts???

Succes Don!

When I booted in recovery mode my only choice was to install Lion.

IM on with Apple Support again trying to figure out how to install Sierra on top of itself.

Ugh

Don

reboot your Mac, - hold Command+R keys (till after the "boing-restart-sound" and you see the Apple-logo).

Wait for dialogue-box to appear.

Make sure your wifi is active, on the right above in menu-bar (it could be you need the password of your internet-modem)

Then install macOS Sierra again (you need to type in your Apple-ID with password).

This is the way you install on top of your existing macOS.
