Apple Watch Mail Notifications Behavior

I can't be the only one with this problem.  When I get new mail on my phone, I get a notification on my Apple Watch.  That part works fine (4 different accounts including iCloud, IMAPs, and an Exchange account). But I get very inconsistent behavior with the read/unread status of messages depending on how I respond the Apple Watch notification. Watch Series 2, latest watch OS (3.1.3), but issues described below have persisted since I bought the watch. I should probably also mention that the watch is set to mirror the phone for notification.

-If I swipe down to dismiss, this sometimes marks it as read, sometimes leaves it unread. (my preference would be to leave it unread, but I don't even know what it is supposed to do because the results are so inconsistent)

-Scroll through and select "dismiss", sometimes marks it as read, sometimes leaves it unread. (my preference would be to mark it read, I think this is the normal behavior but not sure).

-Scroll through and select "mark as unread", actually works. So does "trash".

-If I ignore it and put my arm back down, it usually leaves the email as unread, but sometimes marks it as read.  This is the most frustrating b/c I will miss new emails since they get marked as unread without me really marking them so.  When I catch this happening, I've noticed it is instantaneous. For example, I get a notification on my watch and my computer at the same time.  Suddenly, on my computer, no more new email notification, the new message gets marked as read.

I don't remember this happening with Watch OS 2, but I can't be sure it is a Watch OS 3 thing since I got a series 2 watch at the same time I went to Watch OS 3.

Anyone else having these problems?  Is this just a bug and I need to be reporting them to Apple?

Dismissing notifications in any way should not mark them as read, only opening the email should do that.

You could try resetting your apple watch and re-pair to see if this fixes the issues - Unpair your Apple Watch and iPhone - Apple Support

It might be a good idea to leave this as feedback for Apple to investigate the inconsistent behaviour further.

Thanks for the reply, Warren. Clarification on "dismiss" is much appreciated. This has been a problem since day one with the series 2 watch, so I don't think that resetting it is going to fix the issue.  But, if I get desperate enough, i may try it.  The main reason I don't want to do that is all the hassle of re-adding credit cards to Apple Pay. But you're right, it is a troubleshooting step i haven't tried yet.

So, I'm not actually sure that all of the problems are necessarily from the watch. In particular, I think that when an unread email gets marked as read (instantaneously), that it might be the iPhone doing it, because, well the iPhone did it when I wasn't wearing the watch.

I found a Macumors forum discussion in which a similar problem was discussed: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/iphone-automatically-marks-e-mail-as-read.1 310245/

This might be my issue, but it seems to only happen with one or two specific senders, so I'm not convinced yet. But I will try to pay more attention to my iPhone mail app usage and try to figure it out.

And along the lines of things happening only with specific senders: on the watch, from one email address only (so far), I will get two notifications in a row, though only one email has been sent, and only one notification on the iPhone.

I've been so frustrated with this behavior.  I even recently lost a client because I didn't notice an email from them that was immediately marked as read by (I'm assuming) the watch.  For me, it happens to about 50% of my emails.  And it seems to happen even if I don't move my wrist to activate the watch screen.  I've seen a notification show up on my computer while typing and then have the notification quickly disappear, like it was dismissed by something.  When I look down at my wrist, the screen isn't on, so I know I haven't inadvertently acknowledged the email.

As an experiment, I removed my business email account from the watch notifications.  So those emails do not go to my watch at all, only my phone.  Since that time, no emails in that account have been unexpectedly marked as read.  However, emails in my iCloud account (which still go to the watch) continue to be marked read when I've never seen them.

The primary reason I bought this watch was for the email and text notifications, so this issue is quickly making me reconsider the value of keeping the watch.  Such a bummer.

I've checked the link that you posted, and the contents are pretty dated (2013).

I'm using a MBPr and an iPhone for a very long time, but I'm only using Apple Watch 2 since a few weeks ago.

This behaviour didn't ever occur to any of my mail accounts before I started to use the Apple Watch, and now it's very common to lose e-mails because they're getting marked read before I'm even aware that I received them.
