Can External CD drive work with imac that has a...

My CD drive in my desktop imac is breaking down and I want a reliable external CD drive for copying original music from my itunes.   The USB superdrive I bought says compatible with mac systems without a built in optical drive; I was hoping it would work even though have a CD drive.  I plugged it in and nothing happened.  Nothing showed up on my desktop. Should I be looking elsewhere for the superdrive?
