mac trackpad tap to click is not working

Hi,

I am using an iMac, with the latest version of OS X Yosemite (version 10.10).

I've noticed, that my trackpad "tap to click " functionality has stopped working suddenly.

I have this "tap to Click" functionality enabled in the trackpad preferences already (i tried disabling-restarting-- followed by enabling-- restarting the iMac altogether.. with no luck).

This functionality was working fine, earlier.

Also,

The right click on my magic mount has stopped working... (yes, I have this enabled in the magic mouse preferences, and tried disabling-enabling and restarting as well).

Could any of the Genius-experts.. help me here?

Hi inarenb,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that situations like this can be very frustrating. I would first suggest reading over the following article for troubleshooting, including using Safe Mode. Please feel free to let me know if the issue continues.

Trackpad or Magic Trackpad is jumpy or erratic - Apple Support

Best regards,

Joe

Hi Joe,

Yes, I've just tried all from the suggested link.

Nothing works. I'm at the same situation again.

@ Anyone else..?

Why does this happen..?

Hey inarenb,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Community. Due to the nature of your issue or question you may find more information by using another one of Apple's support resources - https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action.

Cheers,

Joe

I have had the same problem as above.

It seems to happen after resuming from a long sleep. Then I can move the pointer using the pad but none of the gestures work ( scroll click etc ) . I can click using the click button only.

I tried restarting the trackpad but that doesn't help.

I have found that fully restarting the iMac makes it work every time but it's quite a pain to have to do this.

Using new iMac and Yosemite

I do hope they can look into this without referencing us to another irrelevant support document :-)

Inarenb,

I've got a an idea for you to try if your up to it. To be honest I've no idea what is causing such an issue for you. I know that with older Macs that I've owned sometimes removing a preference file fixed strange behavior. In your users folder there is a preference file that stores the settings for your trackpad. What I want to try is have you delete it and restart your computer. When your computer turns back on it will regenerate the preference file with factory settings. After which I will have you try turning on the settings again.

To get to the file first we have to enable you to see hidden files.

Open Terminal.

Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Terminal

Type in the following command and press return at the end

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean true ; killall Finder

Now that your hidden files are shown goto your users preference folder and remove the .GlobalPreferences.XXXX.plist file ( XXXX part varies by computer. )

**Hint while in Finder hold down the ( Option ) key and select Go > Library from the menu bar. It will take you to your users library folder.

Macintosh HD > Users > Your Users Home folder ( ex westongallagher ) > Library [ It's a Hidden Folder ] > Preferences > By Host > Delete ( .GlobalPreferences.XXXX.plist ) [ It's a hidden file ]

Restart your Computer

Try re-enabling tap to click and the likes for your trackpad and magic mouse.

Oh to re-hide your not so hidden files.

Open Terminal.

Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Terminal

Type in the following command and press return at the end

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean False ; killall Finder

Hope that helps,

Weston

I have a further bit of information. If I change the sleep settings to stop the machine from going into hibernation, it will come back from any length of sleep with no problems to the trackpad. The loss of the trackpad functions only happens coming back from hibernation.

It works for me.. Thanks

Thank you so much!

Thank you @westongallagher!

This worked for me. thanks for the easy to follow instructions

Thank You for the clear and easy to follow instructions. I had the same issue on my 2015 macbook pro and your solution completely resolved it. Regards.

That worked for me, too! (MacOS Sierra 10.12.6)
