Fragile Screens on iWatch
I today broke the screen on my iWatch, with a Sapphire crystal screen. Putting it on as most of us do, I rolled the wrist to secure the strap and the watch fell to the floor, shattering a seemingly unbreakable crystal. The height that this happened - exactly 30 inches. Please do not listen to the sales people who tell you how robust this is - treat it like your most valuable possession as $518 for an official replacement is hard to swallow.
I Have dropped far cheaper watches, from greater heights than this without damage, so to say I'm disappointed in the quality of the apple product is to say the least.
I am fortunate to have AppleCare+ so will only have to pay $99, but treat your watch with extreme caution and care.
Saphire is quite hard and extremely resistant to scratches. But sapphire is also brittle and will "shatter" if dropped onto a hard surface. I always treat my Watch as if it is a valuable possession.
In describing the craftmanship of the Apple Watch, Apple calls Sapphire crystal "the second-hardest transparent substance after diamond," adding "that's why we chose it to cover the Apple Watch and Apple Watch Edition faces"
Clearly a little misleading when a drop under its own weight from 30inches causes so much damage. My point is to make everyone aware of the delicate nature of what may have been described to them as almost Indestrustable substance. Given how much these items cost of everyone's hard earned money either invest in AppleCare or have second thoughts about where and when you wear your watch.
No, it isn't misleading, Ralph already explained it to you. The hardness on sapphire resists scratching but is more brittle so it can be shattered when dropped depending on the surface it strikes and the angle. I have broken the sapphire crystal on a much more expensive watch than my Apple Watch from about the same distance you described. Cost me more than $99 to fix it. But it never scratched.

No one ever described sapphire crystals as indestructible, at least not to me. My understanding was exactly what Ralph describes: highly scratch resistant, potentially brittle.
And, as I paid almost $600 for my watch, like Ralph, I do treat it as if it were a valuable possession.
Can you please provide a link to this claim?

I have never seen or heard it - I am very careful with mine as it is expensive and something I do not care to break

I agree I have had the screen fall off one Apple One and Two watches and a screen crack on another two watch. To market these as 'Sport" watches is a crime. The staff at Apple stores are now so "cult" like they make the Scientologists seen reasonable. They have been "trained" if a watch screen is damaged it is the users fault as Apple watch screen do not breahk otherwise. A sad example.e of what to expect from post Jobs Apple!
