Cannot Restore Time Machine Using WD MyCloud

Hey Guys,

Having awful issues trying to restore my Mac using Time Machine

Here's a brief background.

TimeMachine saves are on a WD MyCloud device connected directly to the Mac via ethernet. Never had any issues with TM backups or minor retrieves in the past. I messed up the High Sierra upgrade so decided to restore from the TM backup.

The backup is around 4 hours and each time it gets to under an hour it fails with a 'loss of connection' error. At this stage the MyCloud was connected via a switch so thinking this was the issue I connected it directly to the ethernet port on the Mac. Still the same. So I tried to copy the TM folder from MyCloud device to another formatted drive but again it fails during the transfer after a period of time. Migration Assistant has the same result and fails. I took a photo at this stage in case it helps shed any light on the issue:

Thinking it was maybe a permissions issue I booted up into the Recovery Console and ran a "First Aid" on the drive. This didn't help.

Been stuck on this for the last 5 days and I can't afford to lose these backups.

I also exported the TM upgrade log when it failed after almost 3.5 hrs

I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on this for me or offer up a few theories on it could be so that I may investigate further.

Clarification question - are you booted into the Recovery Partition when you are trying the restore?

If you install the OS on the internal drive, boot normally, and use the Time Machine application, can you access the backup and restore?

Time Machine does not support NAS devices other than the Time Capsule. If you can connect the drive directly via USB, try that instead.

Knowing you haven't had issues restoring in the past and more importantly knowing you installed a beta OS (High Sierra) makes me think you booted into the beta's Recovery HD instead of a Sierra Recovery HD. If you have the macOS Sierra full installer from the App Store or can re-download it, create a USB thumb drive (8GB) installer of Sierra. Boot from that and try your Restore again. I hope you did not format or convert your drive to APFS when you installed the beta.

Secondly for those that say TM will ONLY work with Time Capsule, this is incorrect as many, many people use NAS servers for their TM backups without trouble. Indeed, WD even advertise their NAS drives as being fully compatible with TM. https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=3561

FWIW, Apple does not support third-party NAS drives. And despite what manufacturers claim, they more often than not fail to recover files using TM. There are plenty of posts where that is the case.

In addition to Apple's AirPort Time Capsule, Time Machine is also compatible with a USB hard disk drive directly connected to the current production AirPort Extreme Base Station.

Wrong. Those backups will never be reliable. Complaints regarding non-Apple NAS devices continue to arise on this site with disturbing regularity, practically every day, since Time Machine was first introduced nearly a decade ago.

Please refer future questions to your NAS device manufacturer. At your option contact Apple directly, who will refer you to the very same Support document I already provided to you, as they always have, and might just charge you for their assistance. Single incident support is $29 US, unless they consider it a systems integration or network configuration question in which case their fee will be $695.

I agree that they may not be as reliable but that's a far cry from what you said previously, "Time Machine will not work with a non-Apple NAS device."

The increase is complaints regarding non-Apple backup drives will obviously increase year upon year as more NAS devices are sold. It could also be argued that Apple are seeing an increase in service requests due to the increase in their sales. The more of something that is sold the more one expects to see a rise in servicing requests.

I beg to differ.

I successfully restored my iMac using the very same NAS I was having issues with. The issue was that I had set my TM to backup a folder on another drive that was no longer available. Indeed it hasn't been available for some time but as I never had reason to use TM for a full restore I didn't catch on. Then when I was attempting to restore TM was timing out as it was looking for and trying to write to a drive that wasn't there. Therefore the restores were failing. I reinstalled Sierra and copied everything over manually, formatted the NAS server and made a fresh TM backup. To test the backup out I ran another restore and this time it worked flawlessly.

In closing, I do agree with you, as pointed out previously, that NAS servers may not be as reliable as an Apple device for TM but it's incorrect to say that NAS servers "will never work". They do work and are fairly reliable. In this instance the problem I encountered was all of my own doing.

If you think that using "fairly reliable" yet unsupported Time Machine implementation that Apple can change with every macOS update comprises an acceptable backup strategy, that's your business. Anything less than a 100% reliable solution is unacceptable for my needs.

NOTHING is "100% reliable". Nothing. You will have far better results using something that is at least supported, however.

Anecdotal reports are of limited value, and someone else's experiences don't matter. You shouldn't care about my needs any more than I care about yours. The point is that you are not using a supported Time Machine configuration. Therefore, expecting it to be reliable is unreasonable.

Since you asked though, I have used every conceivable supported Time Machine configuration there is – which consist of a number of various generation Time Capsules, connected by Ethernet or wirelessly, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, directly connected hard disk drives using Thunderbolt, USB 2 and 3, FireWire 400 and 800, both bus powered as well as those with their own power supplies. I also use USB hard disk drives connected through powered and unpowered hubs, as well as USB drives connected to the current generation AEBS. These are desktop and laptop drives in various enclosures from different manufacturers including all the popular ones.

That is a lot of backups, for many Macs, over many years, in several different offices, nearly all of which are up and Internet connected 24/7/365. At least one those locations has notoriously lousy power. Yet I have yet to experience a single failure to back up or restore. None. Ever. Yes, that is by definition 100% reliable, and as I wrote anything less would be unacceptable for my needs.

I understand my needs do not describe everyone else's, and that plenty of people are willing to roll the dice on the chances that an unsupported backup solution will work in the dire circumstance in which it is needed. If that describes you, fine, but consider yourself forewarned.

There are technologically sound reasons unsupported backups such as yours will never be reliable. The primary reason is that they do not use AFP for their file transfer protocol. They can't, because AFP is proprietary technology that Apple does not license to anyone – Western Digital for its "My Cloud" or anyone else. Instead, those device manufacturers use an open source imitation of it (netatalk) that has always been troublesome, has never been reliable with Time Machine, and for which its developers always have to catch up every time Apple changes the way Time Machine works. Apple has done that with every major macOS release, as well as many incremental updates. I have never known Apple to divulge the nature of those Time Machine changes. After all it's their product to change at their whim. Additional TM changes are almost certain to occur when High Sierra is released in a few short months. When the predictable deluge of complaints ensues, the hapless users inevitably blame Apple, or Time Machine, or Western Digital... everyone but themselves, for willfully having implemented an unsupported backup strategy. Decide whether you will count yourself among them, or not.

I trust this lengthy response adequately addresses your concern regarding Time Machine's reliability with supported devices.
