How to recover a device previously removed from...

My son experienced an awful mugging incident where his iPhone 5s was stolen and was forced at gunpoint to reveal his iCloud login info to them. So what's the use of findmyiphone feature in this case since the bad guys could remove the device from the list using the login info?
We still have the original box showing the IMEI & serial numbers... So, is there a chance to place back the iPhone on the list of devices to report it's loss?
