I am unable to add contacts in a list beyond 44...

I have a MacBook Pro and I am trying to add a Group in Contacts.  I get to 44 and then I am unable to add any beyond that.  I have done this before and the list numbers about 75. What am I doing wrong that I can not add more cards to the list?  Thanks.
