iPod generation 7 upload

I am thinking of buying an iPod gen 7 and dont really know how I would upload music?  I am not very internet savy, I also own no music.  I use apple music and have all of mine downloaded to the icloud music.

My question is for the Gen 7, if i dont own any music, can i just download from my apple music or do i have to purchase music?
