POP Messages gone after server name change

Hello,

I migrated our domain to Google G Suite hosting.  The server has always been a POP server, EIMS on an old school Graphite G4 no less.  This migration required a server name change in the Mail app settings from the old mail.domain.ext to pop.gmail.com.  When I made the change and the iPad confirmed the account all the messages that had been downloaded prior to the server migration vanished from the Mail app.  When the change was made on an iPhone 6 there was a brief period where the messages were still taking space in the mail app but each said 'The message has no content'.  Soon after they all vanished as well.  There has been no issue on any of our Mac desktops, Windows PCs or Android devices.  It acts as though the messages were never actually downloaded from the server.  This is not how POP mail should act.  POP downloads the messages from the server to the local machine allowing you to view them offline.

My question is, are these messages gone from these devices for good?  I'm not open to the obligatory 'restore your phone' or 'download them from the old server' responses.  I would like to know if the messages are still on the devices but somehow hidden, and if so how to access them.  If they are truly gone why does the IOS mail app not follow RFCs for POP access?

Thanks in advance

7
