laptop cannot find drive

all i get is a big question mark.

Is this on a Mac? You've linked to an Apple Remote Desktop support topic which is for iOS.

What exactly are you doing when you get the "?", is this on startup?

Do you have a folder with a ? on it? If so, that means your HDD or SSD got damaged or unplugged. If you see some random text over an Apple logo or the ?, then that means the drive failed. If you don't want to open up your computer, try contacting Apple.
