Output sound from Thunderbolt not working?

We watch HBO and stream from my MacBook to my older flatscreen. I have a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter that worked fine up until 2-3 weeks ago. Now we get a picture but no sound except on the Mac. Have switch tv inputs, HDMI cable and just bought a new adapter. Still not working. Spend 45 minutes with Apple support doing Safe Boot, checking sound output (the HDMI is recognized but no output). Have rechecked tv and soundbar settings. Nothing. Again, worked fine until a couple of weeks ago.
