What those this mean: This update is not availa...

Trying to install OS Yosemite on my iMac with OS 10.7.5. I have updated my password and cc info for iTunes but still get this message: This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled. What can I do?

It means the OS you have was purchased by someone else with a different Apple ID. You probably purchased your computer second hand. The original owner did not wipe the drive before giving it to you. Your model came with two software restore DVDs which the seller should have given to you. You will need to use Disk 1 to boot the computer. Then wipe the drive and reinstall the version of Snow Leopard it came with. You can then go to the App Store and download the latest version of OS X for your machine. See How to get macOS Sierra - Apple Support.

Snow Leopard Erase and Install

  1. Insert Snow Leopard DVD into the optical drive and restart the computer.
  2. Immediately upon hearing the chime hold down the C key.
  3. Release the key when the Apple logo appears and wait for the loading to finish.
  4. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities' menu.  After Disk Utility loads select the out-dented disk entry from the side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the Disk Utility’s right window.  Set the number of partitions to one (1) from the drop down menu. Click on the Options button and select GUID, click OK button, set the format type to MacOS Extended, Journaled. Finally, click on the Apply button.
  5. After formatting has finished quit Disk Utility.  Continue with the OS X installation and follow the directions.
  6. When the installation has finished the computer will restart into the Setup Assistant. After you complete the Setup Assistant you will be running a fresh installation of Snow Leopard. Open Software Update and install the recommended updates.
  7. Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Hi Kappy,

Thanks for your quick response. I bought the computer new but over the years got a few different apple accounts and got them mixed up.  I did manage to install the OS but some of the software I must have gotten through a different account?! Do you know if there is a way to find and merge the accounts.

You cannot merge Apple ID accounts. You would have to contact Apple directly to request that.
