Brightness on Macbook

I have the new rosegold 12' macbook with the newest update. Recently, the brightness has been malfunctioning. It will not move from the highest level. If you press the F1 key to turn down the brightness the screen goes black as if it's going to sleep. Trying to do homework at night in the dark with a really bright screen is a bit painful... So, any suggestions on how to fix this problem?
