external hard drives

Wanting to install an external Hard drive on my Mini Mac

   OS Serria

   2.5 GHZ i5

   16 MB

   500 GB Sold State SATA Drive

Looking at WD 4TB (external hard drive) easy store desktop backup. Is this a good external hard drive for my mini mac? Can it be setup to back my photo/Movies, Music and documents separately? Like in partisans 2Tb for photo, 1 TB for music & 1TB for all the rest? I asked Best Buy they said it could not be done. I want something so when I download a photo or music it sent straight to my external hard drive. I'm not computer savvy at all.

Yes, you can set up partitions on an external drive. Not a problem at all - you can use Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) for that. No need to "install" anything - once you have it formatted properly and created the partitions, all you need to do is to keep it plugged in and it'll be available. If there is any software on that drive when you buy it, delete it - there is nothing needed for a hard drive to work.

I'm not sure if you can set up a download to go to an external partition directly - you can choose a destination in your browser > Preferences > download location, but you'd need to change that for whatever you are downloading. I think a better way is to choose your desktop for a download location and, every couple of days or so, move/copy the music to the music partition, video to movies, etc, etc. Simply drag the music to the music partition; after you make sure it works there, you can delete it from your Mini.

If this is what you intend to do, remember that the only copy of your stuff will be on the external drive > better make sure you have a second one so you have a backup. Hard drives do fail.
