why is apple watch counting my knitting motions...

Apple Watch 1, software 3.1.3. Counting knitting motions as steps!

Hi

During general daily wear, the Activity app tracks your arm motion (measured by the accelerometer) when estimating results including steps taken.

It appears that your arm motion, when knitting, is being misinterpreted by your watch.

Calibrating your watch can improve the accuracy of estimations made by Activity app and Workout app. It does this by teaching your watch how your arm motion relates to your stride lengths when walking or running at different speeds.

More information and instructions for calibrating your watch are available via the link below. The article also includes instructions for resetting existing calibration data and starting afresh. (Resetting your calibration data will not erase your Activity history).

Thank you, Jonathan, I'll give this a try.

You're welcome!

When I sit to knit I put my watch in Airplane Mode and it does not record steps. Be sure that in Watch Settings> General> Airplane Mode, you do not have your watch and iPhone mirrored.

I just got a series 3 and I too get steps for knitting. I never got steps for knitting with my Fitbit. I’ve recalibrated and exercised right after. It’s made no difference. I sit and knit and watch the steps rise. I, too have spoken to Apple support. So after buying what I thought would be a great tool for my exercise plan, and certainly believing it would be much better than my Fitbit, it’s sadly not. It’s a pretty watch and allows me to access apps, but the step accuracy is surely lacking. I’m very disappointed.
