dots under apps not appearing

In the past week or so the dots under the app in the task bar (iMac) showing the app is open have stopped appearing. The apps work fine but I cannot instantly see which apps are still open

Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Dock and look to see if "Show indicators for open application" is checked.

If it is, try un-checking and re-checking it.

Thanks this has worked but I have never opened this particular window before so I do not know how it became unchecked
