playing movies on iPad when no wifi available

how do i ensure i can watch a movie on iPad when no wifi is available?  (on airplane).  I know it might be bad question, but I've been on planes before thinking i had movies for kids to watch, only to realize it wouldn't work without some kind of connection.

Download the movies before viewing.

another dumb question then...if i rent movies do i need to have a connection to the internet either through a data package or through wifi?  sorry, i'm not that tech smart.

No. You can download rented movies but make sure to read this support article >  iTunes Store: Movie rental frequently asked questions (FAQ)

It's not a dumb question at all.

Just a quick question related to this rather than starting a new thread: I've downloaded my first movie and it's sitting in Videos on my iPad. I intend watching it en route to Cyprus on Sunday whilst on the plane. I've read that you have to start watching it whilst connected to the internet so that it can be verified, but have also read that you can just switch the iPad to airplane mode and watch without a connection.

Anyone know which of these is the case? Thanks.

Provided you've downloaded the movie to your iPad an internet connection wouldn't be required. I think the link that Carolyn provided above should answer any other queries you may have.

Ok, thanks. I did look at those links but didn't see anything relating to my question. Probably just missed it. Thanks again.

I am a frequent flyer and had several frustrating occasions where I was not able to watch a rented movie on my iPad without WiFi connection (on the plane). I rented the movie from iTunes on my Mac and then transferred it to my iPad. Both iTunes on my Mac and my iPad use the same Apple ID. On the plane it seemed that the ipad wanted to authorize the content again which was not possible due to missing WiFi connectivity hence I couldn't watch the movie. Pretty disappointing!

I tried several things in the past. One thing was to author the movie before I leave to the airport (trying to start the movie and then wait for the message "do you want to play the rented movie?"). That worked if I didn't turn off the iPad after that. If i turned off the iPad I had the same issue as described above.

Here is the REMEDY which I recommend to everyone with the same problem: rent the movie directly on your iPad! This worked for me ALL THE TIME (and I did this multiple times this year). It has the disadvantage that - as far as I know - you cannot transfer the movie to a different device (or to your Mac). But if you are sure you want to watch the movie on your iPad then this is the way I can recommend.

I am actually surprised that I couldn't find this hint on any of the threads here. It just works (at least for me).

Hope that helps you and maybe others.

This was a huge help thanks. Having exactly the same problems with movies transferred to my iPad not playing on airplanes.

As you say, seems the only to ensure you can view it, is to download or rent directly to the iPad and not transfer it from a PC or MAC.

Thanks again.

what is the answer to the question?
