My Apple ID thinks I am somewhere else!

I have just tried to sign into the Apple ID section of the Apple website and I have a message pop up instantly that says: "Your Apple ID is being used to sign in to a new device. Your Apple ID is being used to sign in to a device near Middlesbrough, England."

I am nowhere near Middlesbrough! Why does it think I am there and how can I change it?

I am using a 21.5" iMac running MacOS Sierra

Thanks

If your ISP's egress point to the Internet is in Middlesbrough, that's where it will identify you as being.

The only way a Mac can get an actual location is if it is connected

to a gateway (modem, WiFi network, router) that is GPS enabled

or via a tethered cell phone.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem! Middlesborough too!

Are you with BT fibre by any chance?

Dear All,

My wife and I have started getting the same message today - I even got in when I logged into this board.

We are on BT Fibre.

Did anybody ever get the problem resolved?

Many thanks,

Phil

HI Phil,

Did you ever receive an update on this?

I have just received the same message!

I am having this same problem but haven't updated to Sierra and I am on a Shaw network.

Same problem here, working on my macbook, signed into iCloud and my iPhone says someone is signing in to my iCloud in Manchester (I live on the South Coast and have never been to Manchester!). I checked all my stuff nothing looks amiss, changed all my passwords for EVERYTHING. Signed out and in again on my Apple TV with new password and get same message on my iPhone. Am with Virgin Media for broadband, who I'm interested to see have offices in Manchester......thoughts?

Hi, I live near Maidstone, use Virgin broadband and mine also comes up with Manchester location.

I have this problem and live in Essex. My iPhone and iPad say "Your Apple ID is being used to sign in to a new device. Your Apple ID is being used to sign in to a device near Middlesbrough, England." I use Plusnet. I have changed my password. Is there anything else I should do?

I live in massachusetts and get message saying being used on new device in Maryland

Hi having same message for a while. I'm also with Virgin and I live near London not Manchester! I presume it is how the www connection is set up. Why ican't they use the gps? Seems strange to me : /

What is an ISP egress point and what do we do about it? I can't log in to my iCloud acct, says someone is trying to log in using a device in TX, I'm in CO. When I 'allow' it, I get no code and my computer continually asks me to sign into iCloud.

There is a wire going from your house to equipment owned by your Internet service provider. There is a wire from that equipment back to your providers central office. Your ISP may have a network entirely owned by them that stretches for hundreds of miles, possibly into another state, where their network connects to the Internet. That is the egress point. It could be down the street from you, it could be far removed from your actual location.
