Issue with editing in Preview

Hi,

I have been using Preview to edit some photos for a few months now. So far it has been working for what I need, but a week or so ago I've started getting a pop-up whenever I edit the photo in any way (cropping, light, colour, etc.). It says "the original document can't be changed, so a duplicate with your changes has been created". I've never run into this problem before, as usually I can edit and close the file with no issue. Now, if I want the changes to be saved, a new file has to be created. I'm wondering if this has happened to anyone else, and if so, was it able to be fixed? Seems like a problem some users have had with Evernote, but I haven't found any threads with the issue having to do with photos.

Edited to add: I also just remembered that when I hold down right click + option I'm unable to delete the document. It still says "Move to Trash", but it's greyed out now so I have to exit preview and drag the photo from finder. This started happening at the same time, so I assume they are caused by the same issue.
