compatibility of Macs with Sierra and high Sierra

my iMac has a fusion drive, my MBP is SSD.

must I wait to upgrade them together if they share lots of files on dropbox and/or Lightroom etc.?

What is "etc"? Generally, 3rd party apps will be compatible across different versions of the operating system. That is not necessarily true of Apple software.
