external monitors for 2011 MBP

Hello,

I have a let 2011 MBP that is running fine. (I would like to replace it but can't get what I want in India  - configuration limitations )-: ) I was using the 27" ThunderBolt Monitor but stopped using it because it caused the fans to run at top speed. In fact the monitor has been a problem since day one.

My question: considering that it is a 2011model can I still use modern 2017 external monitors with it?

If so any recommendations? I would be using for things like PhotoShop, DreamWeaver, Scrivener etc No gaming.
