Touch screen going crazy
For the past few weeks, the touch screen goes crazy as if an invisible finger is touching the screen in random locations. This happens regardless of if I am holding the iPad in my hand or not. I could be reading a web page and having the opah on the desk and in random it happens.I am not using any screen protector and there are no scratches on the screen.
The iPad goes in this mode in random and it is not linked to any specific application.
The way to get it out of this mode is to hit the power button once and then unlock the screen.
Does anybody else have this issue?
Any solution to this?
Is my ipad broken?
Thanks
Sam
Hi Tiger San,
Try:
1. Power cycle the iPad, turn off and then back on.
2. Hard reset; hold both the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears.
3. Factory restore by attaching to iTunes, but back up all information first so you can restore it.
If none of these steps work, in ascending order of course, then a visit to the Apple Retail store genius bar is in order. Not responding to these steps means a faulty touch screen.

Thank you for your reply. As I said in my original post. Once the iPad gets in that mode I can easily resolve it by pushing the power button to lock the sreen and then unlock and resume.
My concern is that my iPad did not use to behave this way before andbnow it is.
I want to understand the possible source of the issue and if it can be resolved. I came across one other posting that had the same problem.
Thanks
Sam
Ralph provided your best approach. The only thing you can do to try to prevent this is to Restore your iPad. Or, at your option, you can just take it into an Apple Store, where they will undoubtedly exchange it on the spot.
Some others have had similar problem and resolution was to replace the iPad. However, a reset, or restore from backup or a restore to factory defaults may resolve the problem if it is a software corruption problem. If it still happens after a restore to factory defaults then I would call either AppleCare or make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it is likely a hardware problem.
Thank you all. I wil try the restore and then apple visit.
I will update this post with the result.
Thanks
Sam
yes, mine is acting the same. When I open Safari it just goes crazy. Shifts the screen right & left, makes the screen big & little intermittently. This doesn't happen all the time but alot of the time. Another wierd thing it does is when I am reading books on ibooks, the pages will start flipping backwards on their own.
*****! If anyone has this problem, please let me know so that we can share our pain. I am going to try the restore & see if that helps.
Sad in South Georgia
Not quite the same problem but my screen goes into large mode and I cannot get out of it. The screen has everything so large just finding the slide bar to get it started is almost impossible, then for no apparent reason it goes back to normal size. Only had the i-pad since Xmas and wondering if I should get Apple to change it just in case it get's worse.
Weird!
Mine is doing the same thing, our grandson was playing an app and the screen size went to off the scale, hard even to find slider to turn on. press the re-set button and screen goes normal for a second then back to off the screen size. leave a few minutes then it goes back to normal on it's own. Thought the little rascal had some how downloaded a virus. Should I get Apple to re-place as it is only 3 months old
Joebear, I took mine back to the place I purchased it, since I had the "black tie" service plan and they did do a manufacture warranty replacement for me. All better now!
I am having the same issue with my iPad. This is the second time it has happened. It would be nice to have a better resolution than just replacing the device. I rebooted the iPad and reset it with no luck . I guess the screen on the iPad *****...
I'm also having this issue but with my iphone 4. I restored several times and the effects still return. I also experience the "dead strip" where and entire horizontal strip about the width of your finger has no effect, usually right above the dock icons. I've got to Apple and to humor them them sent me home telling me NOT to restore but to just sync your music/apps etc. to a "new" phone. during my process I decided to play around with the scrolling of languages you can choose prior to full activation and the dead strip effect appeared, proving it is not my restores effecting the phone but the phone itself.
In short, if you're experiencig any of the effect people have mentioned above, it's best to replace your product. It's a clear defect of the device itself.
NOTE: I use one of those static screen protectors and the effects occured whether it was on or off. The screen is NOT effecting the defective phone.
Cheers, hope you all have Apple Care .
Mine has been doing this as well. Turned off then back on, reset, restored, do me everything possible and the screen still goes crazy every now and then so I'm off to the genius bar on Tuesday.
Does this happen while charging only?
I've had this issue for months, tried a restore as new, restore from backup, restore via DFU. Nothing helps, the problem is random and even after locking the screen it may not fix it and I just get frustrated. After about 5 mins it works again or I'd have to do a hard reset. I'm going to record the wonkiness via my iPad and post it here. I'm out of warranty so does anyone know how much Apple charges for this up here in Canada?
