iMessage and sms from iMac failure

Help.

I can receive all messages, iMessage & Sms, on my iMac. However I am unable to send iMessages or Sms from my iMac to anyone other than my own iPhone which is registered on the same account. I've looked on other posts and followed all the correct procedures to make sure everything is set up correctly and I still cannot send a message from my iMac. I've spent hours and hours going around in circles. I've spoken to friends with iMacs and iPhones who say I just turned my Mac on logged in and it worked fine. I'm new to Mac but have used iPhone since the 3gs
