Connect Mac Pro to PoE Injector to IP Cameras

My Mac Pro has two ethernet ports. I'd like to connect our IP cameras directly to the Mac using its second ethernet port. (I have IP Camera security software on my Mac) And I don't want the two ethernet ports to be bridged (i.e., no Internet Sharing to the second ethernet port).

Mac Pro ethernet#2 -- PoE Injector -- IP Cameras

2 reasons to do this; keep the passive camera traffic off the Mac Pro = Airport = internet network, and isolate the cameras from direct access to the internet.

Even with all of them set to manual IP addresses on the same sub-domain (10.0.2.x), they don't see each other.

Do I absolutely need a router to make this work?

Would a cross-over cable between the Mac and the Injector make it work?

Would any of the Virtual Interfaces help?

It all works if I run everything through our Airport router (using the 10.0.1.x sub-domain and appropriate manual IP addresses), but I'd like to keep the cameras off the Airport router.

cheers,

Gregory
