pdf opened in Preview saved at wrong page size

I work in construction and receive architectural drawings as email attachments. I open them with preview and then save them by using the "export as PDF" command. Preview changes the size from a drawing size (Arch D) to letter. If I latter need to send them to someone or have them printed, they have to be enlarged back to original size, losing detail. How can I save these drawings at their original sizes?  Macbook air running Sierra 10.12.8, Preview version 9.0. Thanks in advance for any help.
