Is APFS really faster?

I saw a demo of High Sierra copying files which seemed blazingly faster than El Cap. I gushed excitedly to a back-up app developer  about the speed increase implied for back-ups. He replied as follows: "It's not really faster, David. One specific operation appears faster -- namely, copying files. But that's only because the actual copy is delayed until the data is changed. (Note, too, that this means making a copy of a directory won't 'save' the directory if disk corruption occurs; it will affect all unchanged copies of the file, not just the one.) There are lots of disadvantages to APFS. Be aware."

Is this accurate? Delaying updating the copy makes no sense to me. There are no speed increases during back-ups?

Any info gratefully received.

It's good to learn about this new file system, but for most users you shouldn't jump in with the first version. It will be a great addition but give it some time to mature a bit.

Here are some links to learn more about APFS.

Thank you, Diane. Sound advice. regards.

Have you registered for a free Developer account? There is documentation there that explains APFS in greater detail. APFS is specifically designed for modern storage solutions using SSD, and faster PCIe-based SSD storage.

APFS uses cloning that provides “near-instantaneous” copies (without using additional storage space) of files and directories when on the same drive. Clearly, copying from an APFS drive to an external USB3 FAT32 drive enclosure is unlikely to benefit from this innovation. The “near-instantaneous” term does not allude that one is waiting for a copy on a write delay.

Anyone using High Sierra beta right now does not have the final, optimized shipping version. Any commentary at this time about degree of performance will be misleading.

VikingOSX, thank you for your post. Your point noted. regards.
