Dock Freezes in Sierra
I just got my MacBook Pro updated to Sierra a couple days ago.
Everything seems to be just fine except one:
Dock freezes sometimes.
I have the "Automatically hide and show Dock" option enabled, so
supposedly,
the Dock should hide itself when the cursor isn't hovering above it, or when there are no new program activities.
But instead,
the Dock will pop-up and freeze when launching Applications from the Dock, and will not hide anymore unless you move your cursor to it and then move away, forcing it to "reset" it's status back to hide.
Never happened before updating to Sierra.
Wondering if anyone ever experienced the same issue?
Pretty annoying since you will have to manually hide it whenever you click anything on the Dock.
Here are some screenshots that may help:
Hey milkcat0319,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. I can see from your post that you're having issues with your dock since you've updated to macOS Sierra. I'd like to help get your computer working as efficiently as it has before. One thing we can try is to boot your MacBook Pro into safe mode and then restart your MacBook from there. Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening. It also verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed and deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files. Test the dock in safe mode first then restart normally and test your dock again.
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up
Let us know if this helps.
Cheers.
Hi,
I have exactly the same issue and it is tempting me to move back to El Capitan. I use Dock a lot but with such an issue it is really annoying and is unusable.
I tried what you suggested - to run Mac in safe mode, but the same issue is observable there.
Will have to raise a bug on that because it drives me crazy.
Cheers
Click on apple logo > force quit , if any running application is there , select it and force quit , restart the system.
Also go to go folder & type ~/Library select preferences folder right click on com.apple.Dock.plist and move to trash , restart and empty the trash .
If it doesn't work , take back up of all Data and think over reinstalling the operating system once again ,as many terminals commands are there killalldock etc ..... & never used .
Also , it is not commended to open many applications at the same as shown in your screen shot , please try to use one application at a time ( mean to say avoid it ) .
Thanks !
This is happening to me and while not being a structural bug it´s quite annoying...
With the Dock configured for hiding;
Accessing the dock through the mission control window and "clicking" in a app icon (within the dock) the system sends you to the space with the window of that app. However after switching to that space the dock fails to refresh and hide (stays open) only returning to normal behaviour after passing the pointer over it or activating and deactivating the mission control window again.
Is it the same for you???
For me it´s only happening when using the dock from the mission control window...
I was trying to figure out what is happening there and it looks like the Dock "thinks" is it already hidden and stops the hiding animation. If you use it in the mission control window and after clicking the icon quickly move cursor out of the dock it will normally hide itself. If the cursor stays over the Dock then after switching to the application window (full screen window) it won't finish its hiding application and seems to be frozen. Once you move the cursor out and in again and let it get the focus again then after moving out from it will hide it normally.
Something is screwed up there and I hope it will be fixed soon.
Thanks for replying
I just followed the instructions: tried rebooting in Safe mode, then reboot again to Normal mode.
The same problem didn't happen again anymore
Hmmm... for the past five minutes at least.
Will keep testing to see if the same issue continues to happen.
Thanks for your suggestion.

Glad to hear someone having the same problem
Makes me feel a bit better cuz I am not alone XD
Is it the same for you???
For me it´s only happening when using the dock from the mission control window...
It's happening to me even when not accessing Mission Control Window...
Like if I'm accessing the Dock when I was dealing with something on the Desktop, it freezes.
And sometimes it freezes too when I'm accessing Dock from the Mission Control Window...
In my case, it will just happen; no matter if using the Mission Control or not.

I tried your first suggestion,
however, there are only Finder, Line (sth like MSN), Safari running at the time I was clipping the screenshot.
So I don't think running too many programs will be the issue.
Besides, I was not running many programs XD
The running programs will have a little dot under the icon on the Dock
I just tend to "pin" them on it so I can launch them quickly when I need LOL
Thanks for replying again
I'll try to reinstall OS again if the problem continues to happen after other solutions are tried and ended up in vain.
I had this issue when I had a wireless USB mouse plugged in but was using my MacBook trackpad. Unplugging the USB mouse cured it. I also use USB Overdrive so that might be why it was being weird, but if you have a USB mouse try unplugging it and see if that solves it.
THIS!
Thank you!
There's definitely something going on with the Dock with this release. Entire computer freezes for 1 full minute after moving the Dock.
