Clone or clean install of Sierra?

i have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro with 16gb memory running Sierra. I started getting a few errors on the hard drive then it wouldn't start up. Luckily, I had a recent clone of the drive ( latest version of Carbon Copy Cloner 5) so I bought a new 1TB SSD and installed it then cloned everything back on the new drive.

It all works perfectly, but should I have done a clean install and if so, what are the benefits?

for the record, my 1TB SSD has about 650gb of data on it, 200gb of which are photos.

i intend to remove the optical drive and install a new 500gb SSD in its place purely to hold my photos, which will leave me around half of the main SSD free.

So, would it be worth installing a fresh copy of Sierra or stick with what I have?
