Slow iMac 5K
I have a brand new iMac 5K that I received a few days ago. I went about installing my apps (adobe Indesign, Illustrator & Photoshop cc2014, all latest updates) and got all my files transferred and everything else set. I am surprised by how sluggish and laggy the iMac is when handling pdf's and indesign files. I have a pdf, it is a program for a Christmas concert, pretty much all black text, one black vector image of a trumpet. I saved the first 10 pages to send out as a proof. The file size is 455 kb and highest quality. Using Acrobat, latest updates and version, it is sluggish and laggy scrolling through the pages. Same goes with viewing images in Indesign with overprint preview (high res) on.
What is going on here?? The specs of my iMac are:
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) Yosemite 10.10.1
4 GHz Intel Core i7
RAM - 24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4096 MB
1 TB Flash Storage
My Retina MacBook Pro 2.6 i7 with 16 gigs of ram is handling these files faster.
This machine is in warranty, so take it back where you bought it and let them fix it for you. Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.
I have an iMac 5K with similar specs. i7 processor, 24 GB RAM, stock graphics card and 1 TB Fusion Drive. It is not sluggish with InDesign, PhotoShop or any of the other CC applications. I would definitely have your iMac looked at by Apple.
I have the same problem with my new 5k iMac. It's really laggy when I'm using adobe InDesign, photoshop, illustrator or opening PDFs. Generally, my new 5K iMac is really slow compare to my old iMac at work - even when I'm browsing the net or resizing a window. I like to take it in for service but I have my clients work to finish. I've got deadlines coming up all the time. Can they fix this in a day?
I hope you have solved your issue now that a year has passed! I just wanted to post that I have experienced this slow down too but only after switching to Adobe CC from CS6. I had been running on just 8GB for 18 months with no issues before the upgrade. However, a top up last week of a further 16GB has made a complete and total difference to the performance. A simple, fast and at 100GBP, quite inexpensive solution. Looking at Activity Monitor I don't think it would worth adding even more RAM – 24GB seems sufficient to run Ai, Ps, Acrobat, Sketch-up, Office, Mail and Safari simultaneously.
