how do I download documents and desktop folder ...

I've turned off icloud in preferences, now it's put my desktop folder and documents on the icloud and I'd like to put them back on my macbook pro. Any advice? Tried copying them over but that doesn't work.

I've searched for library in the finder but it doesn't show up.
