MAS update oddities

Hey folks,

I have had this problem for quite a while but today it became overwhelming.

Whenever I launch the MAS and click the "updates" button, my list of updates runs long, with many apps showing that the update date is some time in the past, up to four months in the past.  So I click the "update all" and some time later, all the apps listed now appear to be updated.

So then in a few days, I check for further updates, and again a long list of apps appears, quite often containing the names of apps that were just updated a day or two previously.

Today that list ran to 33 apps that supposedly needed updating, some all the way back to March 2017.

In System Prefs > App Store I have selected "Automatically check for updates" and all the options below except for "Install macOS updates."  The option to automatically download apps purchased on other Macs is not checked.

Having checked those options leads me to believe that sometime in the wee hours of the morning, my Mac will ping the MAS and all my purchased apps will be checked to see if they need updating, and if so, my Mac and the MAS will (or ought to) automatically download and install these updates.  This behavior doesn't seem to be working.

I have both a Time Machine backup going all the time as well as an every-three-hours BU and a daily BU to two external drives.  Since the apps on the backups should be backed up copies of the updated apps, I can't imagine that the MAS is trying to update copies of my apps.

Bonus question:  Why does it take at least a minute for the MAS to launch and display its landing page, then another (up to) four minutes to display the updates page?  I've got a fusion drive and my Internet connection is pretty snappy for loading web pages.

Any advice or information on why this is happening and what I can do to improve this operation would be really appreciated.
