macOS Sierra Mail app showing oldest mail first
Hello,
I am using the classical layout in mail (the list) with the newest mail showing at the bottom of the list. Since I upgraded to Sierra, Mail always shows the first mail in the list at the top, even though still the newest mail is selected, after it is brought to the foreground. This happens when Mail was completely closed and when it was minimized.
I checked the preferences of Mail, but I couldn't find any corresponding option there. So I guess this is a small bug in Sierra.
Can someone confirm this? Or has someone even a solution for that?
It is not an option for me to change the order to the newest mail on top, since I am too used to this layout (and it always worked!).
Thanks and regards
Niko
Edit: I found a topic about the same issue in OSX Lion, which unfortunately doesn't seem to be solved:
Hi, when you have your mail app open, you'll see the grey bar on top of your mail... it will say sort by date. if you click this bar, at the bottom of the bar, you will see oldest message on top, or, newest message on top. You can also check your view bar on your top menu bar while your mail app is front and foremost, and it has the same selections.
Hello,
well this is not the point. I have sorted it that way, that the newest mal is at the bottom. This works correctly, but everytime I open Mail, it shows the oldest mail (on top of the list), even though the newest one at the bottom is marked. So I have to scroll down every time Mail was minimized or closed, which is quite annoying.
Is it clear what I mean?
Does really nobody else have this annoying problem?
I checked a bit further and saw the following points:
- when closing Mail you can see it does something to the inbox list
- when opening Mail (or maximizing it again), it obviously builds the inbox list newly and after that it doesn't jump to the currently marked email but stays on top of the list
- when I mark the newest mail (which is at the bottom with my configuration) and I change the sorting order to newest mail on top of the list, Mail jumps to the top and keeps the mail marked. When I then change the order back, it keeps the mail still marked but it doesn't jump to the end of the list where the mail is, but also stays on top of the list. This seems to be the same problem when rebuilding the list after opening mail. In my opinion this is a bug.
I do have the same problem since upgraded to macOS. Looks like a defect to me, lets me wondering how could anything like this slip through testing? Apparently we are the only ones using Mail.app with the newest mail at the bottom of list.
I strongly hope, Apple is aware about this bug and will fix it soon. I can't imagine as well, that nobody uses this configuration (which by the way is the only logical, when you have the preview at the bottom, in my opinion).
In fact, I do have this problem, which is how I just found this thread.
I prefer the old layout, especially on my laptop where screen real estate is at a premium, and I like having my newest mail at the bottom. I didn't have this problem before upgrading to Sierra, and I find it exceptionally annoying.
Seems to be resolved by macOS 12.1 update.
Good Morning,
I am having the same issue and it is terribly annoying. You said that it was fixed in the 12.1 update, but I have that update and I am still having the issue. When I open mail, the oldest message is on top, but I have to manually scroll to the bottom to see the new messages (never did this in older osx versions).
Did you do anything else to make it work, or are you manually scrolling to the bottom of the list as well?
well, it kinda works for me most of the time, although I sometimes find myself at the top of list.
just make sure you have unchecked "Show most recent message at the top" setting in Mail.app Preference pane.
I have been having this problem too and found this thread. Any progress on finding a solution? I too like the classic mode and would rather not switch. Thanks
There was a post in another complaint thread about this issue that pressing the keyboard up arrow key will take you to the next to the last message at the bottom of the list. It appears there are many of us who are annoyed with this problem, I too prefer the classic layout and having newest messages at the bottom of the window. Fix the problem Apple! And it was NOT fixed in 12.1
Still no resolution? How annoying! Sometimes I use the Up arrow/Down arrow approach, but usually option click at the bottom of the scroll bar on the right side of the list. Faster than dragging it down, but so annoying. It's especially annoying when it works correctly on my old white MacBook which is stuck at Lion. Thanks for that too, Apple.
If so, it's broke again in 10.12.5

I guess the best way to deal with it is use the (show newest at top) like mail in iOS does it..
Not a huge deal, but change *****! LOL
