Copying old internal HD to external HD

My 2012 MacBook Pro finally gave up the ghost and I'd like to copy the internal HD to an external HD, and then I'd like to copy files to my 2014 MacBook Pro -- both computers run/ran Sierra.

I have a SATA to USB device and am wondering what's the best way to do this. My main issue is getting my iTunes music back on to my newer laptop and my iPhone; my non-download music collection was loaded onto the old laptop directly from CDs, which disappeared when I made my newer laptop the main computer. I'd prefer not to re-load all of my old CDs back on to my computer!

Could I somehow do a Time Machine backup of the old drive and make this easy?  Unfortunately, I was using Time Machine for my newer computer only. I have a Backblaze backup I could access but I am wondering if there is an easier way to do this. Remember, the old HD is sitting in a dead machine.

Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!

Not if you didn't already do that when the Mac was still working.

Remove the old hard disk drive and install it in an external enclosure. Then, you can use Migration Assistant to completely migrate all its User Accounts to the new Mac.

You’ll have to take out the internal drive and mount it in an external drive enclosure. Once the drive is working again, you can copy it’s files to another location. A service center could do this for you without having to buy the enclosure.

You can also invest in an external drive and keep the entire iTunes Library there.

It's not an enclosure, but I have a powered device that allows me to connect to the old internal drive via USB and view it is an external disk. Do I need an actual enclosure or will this do the trick?

You have nothing to loose by trying it, but the devices I'm familiar with all require a working motherboard to connect.

It sounds as though that should work. "Enclosure" in the sense I suggested doesn't have to enclose anything. It just has to provide an external connection to a USB or other suitable hardware port.
