High Sierra APFS
Will be upgrading to HS soon after release tomorrow....Actually it may be out right now as it JUST flipped over to Monday the 25th as I write this post (Eastern Time).
Anyway, I have a concern about the APFS when upgrading. Since the new APFS is an entirely new underlying structure of the file system, how will it upgrade my drive "on the fly" if I go the upgrade route (as opposed to clean install). I mean, won't I have to re-format or something? Not sure how this is going to work. Anyone who has been in on the beta program that can give me some insight as to how it converts your drive after upgrading? This is the only thing that concerns me. Do I just "let it do it's thing" and wait as it rebuilds my drive?
Any info would be GREATLY appreciated. And yes this is being posted on the 25th, so it is ok to answer.
Best Regards
It is not yet the 25 September in Cupertino, and experience with previous OS releases would suggest that High Sierra will be released at midnight Cupertino time… so about three hours to wait.
You don't have to concern yourself about such minutia. The obsession regarding HFS+ vs. APFS is a non-issue. HFS+ is old and tired. APFS is new and better. So what.
Just upgrade if you want. Or, not. The underlying file format used by macOS makes absolutely no difference either way. It might as well be known by some other acronym. There will be no difference to the end user.
Consider the fact iPhones and iPads have been using APFS since iOS 10.3. Remember all the hassles, complaints, and misery that caused? Thought not.
Here you go: Prepare for APFS in macOS High Sierra - Apple Support. (Summary: you don't need to concern yourself with such minutia.)
I mean, won't I have to re-format or something?
Not unless you already converted a logical volume containing a traditional rotating hard disk drive (meaning, including Fusion Drives) in the course of of testing prerelease versions of APFS. They would need to be reformatted — a normal consequence of evaluating prerelease software. Systems using flash memory exclusively will automatically be converted.
I know! That's completely awesome that we can do snapshots in HFS+ and copying files is instantaneous in HFS+. I've loved that for years!
Hey John,
Thanks for the elitist and condescending answer. Very much NOT appreciated. I asked a simple question out of concern, and get an answer like that. Thanks for NOT helping one bit. The amount of "points" you have is of no concern to me. Maybe someone with something real to contribute will help me out (minus the attitude). No thanks again.
