installer is not accepting my password

I am trying to reinstall microsoft office for mac and when it ask for my password it doesn't like it.  I have also tried going in and changing my password and the computer is not accepting it either.  uggh!! this is frustrating.

Check that caps lock is not on.

If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know that account password, the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.

Otherwise, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.

When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.

In the Terminal window, type this:

resetpassword

That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.

Select your boot volume if not already selected.

Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.

Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.

Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

You should now be able to log in with the new password, but you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application.

Thanks for all your advice,  I can admit now that I am a bit blonde,  the reason why it wouldn't accept my password is because a login in password was not set to my device.  I guess next time I will read more carefully. So instead of changing the old password, I just set a new password and left the old password blank, and it works now.

Lesson, read the print carefully.

Thank you so much for writing the follow-up post Junitothehorse- Im still new to understanding how Mac's work and this was exactly my problem after my computer was reset and the hardrive replaced recently. For a while I was able to download new programs, but then yesterday all of a sudden, I couldn't. Your reply at the end here was exactly my problem, but I would have had no idea without it!

I know you found your answer, but for others that might be having this or a similar issue, it could be asking for your computer login password, not the key or password to the program you are installing / logging into. I know it will sound like the world's worst detective but after trying to insert the software login password several times I realized it might be asking for my Mac login password. it took me a minute, but then I realized it might not be asking for the adobe password, and so I entered the Computer PW with no issues I was up and running in seconds. I hope this helps someone that might be making the same mistake.
