Apple logo & lock symbol in itunes

Hi i brought an iphone 5 recently. the owner said it was locked (she had forgotten her password)

I have factory reset it ( im having Broadband problems so this is not as easy as it might be, and meant i had to get a neighbour to download the file for me and then restore using the downloaded file )

All seemed to go to plan the details have it seems been wiped and itunes is recognising a phone is connected.

I have tried inserting my SIM but itunes says the sim is not supprted (words to that effect). Im a newbi to all this phone stuff so please bare with me.

Im guessing the phone may be locked to a provider and thus the sim im trying is not going to do the trick.

After saying "hello" the phone gives an option of a wi fi network (my own) i type in my id and PW but thats as far as i get i have the wifi symbol showing at the top left after the words no sim.

Turning to itunes :   I have an apple logo with a padlock symbol just above and left, of a text box.

Inside the box it says

"There is no Sim card installed in the phone you are trying to activate..........                                                                       please disconnect and insert a SIN card in the phone".

ANY but ANY help would be appreciated..cheers

The phone is likely carrier locked. My understanding is that carrier locked iPhones can only be activated with the SIM of the registered carrier. See How to unlock your iPhone - Apple Support for details.

The phone may also be subject to activation lock. See Find My iPhone Activation Lock - Apple Support.

The seller should really have gone through the steps in What to do before you sell or give away your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support and told you who their mobile supplier was.
