Future Sierra updates

I'm considering whether upgrading my 21" iMAC late 2012 from Sierra to High Sierra is the right thing to do. It's running perfectly on Sierra, never a hiccup. Will Apple continue to issue security or bug updates for Sierra even though High Sierra is the most recent OS?

I can not speak for what Apple may or may not do—Typically you see update to X.X.5   Right now Sierra is 10.12.6  I would not count on further support, if this is your concern.

Apple always tries to guide you towards the latest macOS for security reasons.  Prepare for APFS in macOS High Sierra - Apple Support

Always have a redundant and current back-up plan up to date. In this way you can always fall back easily if necessary,
