Audio Output Not Working as Expected

Two audio output devices: internal speakers; bluetooth headset. Both exhibiting the same symptoms. Everything was working fine last week. Beginning yesterday there is no audio output unless I have the sound input settings window open.

So if I open browser, go to YouTube and play a video. No sound. Leave the video playing. Go to settings, sound and output. Bluetooth device selected. Still no sound. Go to sound input settings. Sound from video is suddenly present. Go back to sound output; sound quits. Go back to sound input; sound resumes.
