Low quality prints from OSX Yosemite
Hello ladies and gents,
I bought a new colour laser printer yesterday: the Samsung SL-C460WXpress.
I installed the latest OS X drivers and software which I downloaded from the Samsung website. I did the same thing for my Windows machine.
The problem:
When I print from my MBPR with OS X Yosemite, I have barely any options. I can't select the print quality, I can't select the type of photo paper, I basically miss every single option necessary to make good photo prints. As a result, the photos come out granular and of low quality.
When I print from my Windows machine, I can setup my print properties. E.G. paper type (thick, photo matte, photo glossy, etc.), print quality (normal, photo, etc.) and what not. When I set the properties to 'photo' the prints come out amazing.
I don't want to send back the printer, just because OS X is lacking in functionality. Is there anything I can do? Or am I stuck with eithre Windows, or changing printer?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Yours,
Danny
Okay, so no one at Samsung knew what the problem was, so I dug in and after some experimenting I solved it myself.
The problem is bonjour. If you add a printer the plug-and-play way (using bonjour) it will not display all advanced settings. So I deleted the printer and added it via IP using the Line Printer Daemon - LPD. After having added the printer this way, all options were displayed. E.G. Document type; normal, photo, etc. Image quality; normal, best, etc.
So to summarise: Bonjour is the malefactor here.

I've already done that and I still have limited options when printing (only the generic options that Mac OS X provides).
I want to be able to choose the print quality, photo paper, paper thickness, trapping, etc.
Did you also repair permissions & restarted your comp afterwards? If so, then you need to contact the printer manufacturer to determine if the printer if fully compatible w/your current OS. It's possible not all fuctions will work on a Mac/OS. You need to determine that from the manufacturer and/or the printer's user manual.
Allow me to be frank: The printer does print. It just doesn't print well enough. It's obviously a driver problem which means Apple's support is lacking.
I restarted my computer, I did not reset permissions though, because I have no idea what this means.
Launch Disk Utility. Select your system drive. Select "Repair Permissions".
Your initial post was very clear. My response to you was based on your statement of...

My recommendation of contacting the manufacturer and/or reading the user manual still stands if repairing permissions does not work. On some printer/scanners not all of the printer options work in Yosemite. Reason why you need to confirm directly from the manufacturer if the user manual does not state so.
has already provided you w/repairing permissions instructions.
I've done what you've suggested but the options are still limited. I've also made a ticket with Samsung while I was at it.
I'll probably have to change printer or turn to Windows as my main platform. I thought poor driver support was a thing of the past. Apparently I was wrong.

The printer drivers in OS X come from the PRINTER MANUFACTURER, not Apple. Apple may bundle them with software installs/updates, but they do not write them. If the driver has limited capabilities in OS X, it isn't Apple's fault.
I remember that there were Samsung printers a few years ago that had no Mac Support at all. Maybe it's just not a priority for them.
Then I'm afraid you don't know how driver support actually works. When OS X is included in a device's system requirements, it's Apple's responsibility to confirm its truthfulness (not unlike other software).
Anyway, I'll see what Samsung has to say on the matter.

Good information. Thanks.
You're very welcome my friend. Have a great evening all!
