What is fastest migration connection from iMac ...

Hi, I am looking for the fastest data connection method to do the data migration from an iMac 2010 (21-inch, Ci3) to the new iMac 2017 (21-inch,4K,Ci5).

(Years back I used Firewire / Target Disk mode as the fastest data connection.)

The iMac 2010 has: Firewire 800 and Mini DisplayPort, and of course, Ethernet and USB 2 (traditional) ports.

The iMac 2017 has: Thunderbolt 3 via USBC connectors, and Ethernet and USB 3 (traditional) ports.

(no Firewire, no Mini DisplayPort connectors, sigh.)

So my question is, what will be the fastest way to transfer data (Migrate) from the iMac 2010 to the new iMac 2017?

She has not been using any TimeMachine backups (and now would not be a good time to suggest it).

Is it possible to establish a Target Disk Mode from the iMac 2017 to the iMac 2010 if we also buy:

the (expensive at $49) Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) male to Thunderbolt 2 female Adapter $49 Apple (MMEL2AM), plus a Thunderbolt 2 male to Thunderbolt 2 male cable (or Mini DisplayPort male to Mini DisplayPort male cable)?

Or is that not possible, and if so then maybe a straight Cat-6 Ethernet cable to go between the two would be slower but at least work?

Any experiences and advice with this setup situation would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance. :-)
