ios 11 side swipe for split screen not working

since upgrading to 11.0.2 , the 'side swipe' from the right to produce a split screen no longer seems to work.

I did it a lot with the previous software so I'm pretty sure the movement I am using is the same.

Did the upward swipe replace the side swipe option or should the side swipe still work?
