Can I go back to Sierra?
High Sierra will be launched in a few days, and I wonder: If I should have any problems with e.g Photos and editing in High Sierra, can I come back to Sierra? All my pictures may have been configured for High Sierra, and even with a Time Machine backup, can the pictures be "reconfigured" together with the downgrading back to Sierra?
I have decided not to upgrade until I am convinced that I can return 100%.
Eagerly awaiting reply!
FWIW, there's no such thing as "pictures","configured for High Sierra". As long as you have a Time Machine backup of Sierra you can revert back from High Sierra.
It is always a good idea to have at least two backups before a major upgrade like this one. Have Time Machine on one drive and a full booting clone on a separate drive- CCC and SuperDuper! are excellent tools for this.
You will be able to boot into Sierra immediately if you have that clone.
But if your internal drive is an SSD as in all recent mac laptops it will be automatically converted to the new file system APFS, which means the drive will have to formatted as HFS+ if you are to then install Sierra again (Sierra cannot boot from an APFS formatted drive).
Thanks.
What a wonderful way to scare an old man...
Not meant to scare you, it is just common sense that you should be prepared.
Usually, upgrades go just fine.
But as Murphy's law has it, problems seem to happen more often to people who don't have backups.
Please read Upgrading macOS without fear. The same principles will apply equally to High Sierra.
I must admit that I have been a amber of the Public Beta group. Unfortunately I found out that editing photos was difficult/hopeless. after having consulted apple here in Norway I decided to delete everything on my Mac and reinstall everything. I managed quite well (it took some time, though), except for one problem. Photos app reported to me that mye photos "belonged to a newer version than Sierra" and could not be used.
This is what I now fear - that editing in High Sierra will work poorly and that is why I want to be careful.
I must admit that all other upgrades have been absolutely super.
Another option if you want to "test drive" High Sierra is to
install it on an external USB3 drive. It won't boot as fast as
if it would if installed internal and may encounter a some
sluggishness (really hard drive technology will be limiting transfer),
but at least you can try things out.
This way, you won't have to disrupt your current installation at
all, so it will be safe. If the external drive is an SSD, it will be quite
quick booting.

FWIW, that is a different issue than what you first posted. It's quite possible that changes to Photos in High Sierra also made changes to the Photos Library which Sierra can't use. The pictures themselves wouldn't have changed. Editing is fine in High Sierra.
Hi dialabraian,
Thank you for your reply. I mentioned "pictures" in my first post, meaning editing in Photos in Sierra in comparison to High Sierra public beta. If I read your reply to me correctly you have tested high Sierra including editing photos. And that is really very reassuring for me!
Thanks
Nils
